Why Pure Silk Over Satin?

When it comes to accessories for your hair, skin, and sleep routine, the fabric you choose matters. Many high-street brands promote “silk” products that are actually satin or a silk–satin blend. While satin can look shiny, it’s usually made from synthetic fibres like polyester and lacks the benefits of true silk. At The Silk Studio, we create 100% pure mulberry silk accessories — hand-dyed, hand-finished, and crafted with care — so you can experience the real difference.

Why Pure Silk Beats Satin Every Time

  • Better for Your Hair
Pure silk has a natural, ultra-smooth surface that reduces friction and prevents tangles, frizz, and breakage. Satin — especially polyester satin — can still snag and dry out your hair.

  • Kinder to Your Skin
Silk naturally absorbs less moisture than cotton or synthetic fabrics, helping your skin and hair retain their own oils overnight. This makes our silk sleep hair wraps, scrunchies, bows, eye masks, and heatless curling rods a beauty essential.

  • Breathable and Temperature-Regulating
Pure silk fibres help your skin breathe, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Satin, by contrast, can trap heat and feel uncomfortable.

What Makes Our Silk Accessories Stand Out

We use 19 momme, 100% pure mulberry charmeuse silk, sourced from a GOTS-certified silk mill. This means it meets rigorous environmental and social standards from farm to fabric. Many department stores offer “pure silk” at cheaper prices, but it’s often impossible to trace its origin or confirm the quality.

Every piece is then hand-sewn and hand-dyed in our Frome studio by me and one trusted seamstress. Unlike larger silk brands and overseas factories, our small-batch approach means each accessory receives exceptional care and attention.

Beware of “Silk” That’s Actually Satin

It’s common for brands to describe their accessories as “silk” when they’re actually a blend of silk and satin — or 100% satin with no silk at all. While these can mimic the sheen of silk, they don’t offer the same hair-friendly, skin-kind benefits. Always check the fibre content before you buy.
