A Provence Fairy tale – in the Cotswolds

It’s a dream come true to have such a beautiful shoot featured on one of my all time favourite wedding blogs, Rock My Wedding. This stunning lavender, French Provence Wedding Editorial which myself and Fine Art Photographer friend, Jennifer Jane Photography organised and creatively directed together, has made the cut and was recently featured on the blog.

The Concept

Jennifer Jane and I had spoken about making a trip to France to shoot in the lavender fields long before the pandemic struck, so when lockdown restrictions eased in the Summer of last year, we took the opportunity to fulfil our dream of styling and shooting a lavender editorial a little closer to home, here at the breathtaking Cotswold Lavender Farm.

We wanted to bring an element of elegance and romance to an otherwise rustic setting. Keen to work with the purple hues of the fields, we incorporated lavender and paired it with silver accents for a modern and fresh approach. We were careful not to detract away from the beauty of the lavender fields by using more rustic materials when it came to the styling. We opted for a reclaimed wooden table, metal folding bistro chairs (courtesy of Cahoots Events) and lots of rustic vintage props from Rustic Rentals which included a stunning French wheelbarrow and a Champagne crate.

The Team

Each supplier was carefully considered and hand selected by myself and Jen to bring the vision to life. From a stunning macaroon topped cake to the most stunning bespoke hair comb, made especially for the shoot, each supplier got the brief spot on. As a stylist, the flowers are essential to the design and Raven and Rye Grass created the most stunning bouquet and floral arch using blousy summer blooms in a variety of purple, ivory and muted pink hues. The dress was perfect for the shoot, a graceful short sleeved number which blew beautifully in the wind. The stationery really brought a modern feel to the shoot – I loved the crisp, white and simplistic nature against the rustic backdrop. The models were made up beautifully and the brides makeup was subtle and pure, with a pop of purple in the corners of her eyes to complement the scenic setting.

Behind the scenes

We were so fortunate to have a sunny day although I recall it was a little gusty, mainly due to how exposed we were out in the fields. We had to improvise a few times using fishing line to tie around the floral structures to prevent them from toppling over in the wind! It’s always such a gamble when organising a shoot which is entirely outside – with no plan B, you do find yourself doing a sun dance at every opportunity in the hope to keep the rain away. I’m so pleased that my dancing efforts paid off on this occasion…

After months of being in lockdown, the fields were naturally quite busy. We managed to find a more secluded corner as close to the entrance as we could, in the hope to be able to set up and get some shots without passers by photobombing in the background! Jennifer Jane really had her work cut out though, as there were people everywhere! You would hardly be able to tell from the photos though – she did such a great job. On a couple of occasions, we had a few curious passers by come over and ask what we were up to. It certainly was a talking point for those who visited the fields that day!

The smell of the lavender was like nothing else. There were so many different varieties, it was so mesmerising looking out to a sea of purple haze which stretched on all the way to the horizon!

We had lots of fun setting up whilst Jennifer Jane took the models to another part of the fields to take some portrait shots. Everyone chipped in and helped out which is always appreciated on large shoots like this.
